Maria Jos Monteiro Morais

Abstract

Introduction: Hydatidiform mole coexistent with a livefoetus is a rare clinical entity, with an estimate prevalence of 1 in 20000 to 100000 pregnancies. Case report: We report a case of a complete hydatidiform mole with a coexistent euploid foetus. The patient opted for expectant management with close surveillance. At 23 weeks and 5 days the patient was admitted to our emergency room in labour with premature rupture of membranes. Pathologic examination of the placenta was consistent with de diagnosis of complete hydatidiform mole. Additional QF-PCR studies did not permit to confirm or exclude the diagnosis of twin gestation. Discussion: Continuation of a pregnancy with complete hydatidiform mole is an acceptable option. There is, though, an increased risk of developing maternal and foetal complications, as so, very few progresses to term as they often have spontaneous or induced terminations. Close surveillance of an on going pregnancy is essential to detect potential complications.
