Effects of green tea extract on serum concentrations of visfatin and adiponectin and insulin resistance in patients with T2DM

Abstract

Background: The pathophysiologic role of visfatin in obesity and diabetes remains largely unknown. Evidences have demonstrated the protective effects of green tea consumption in diabetes. We examined the effects of green tea extract on the circulating visfatin in patients with T2DM. Methods: Fifty eight patients with T2D were randomized in the following two groups: green tea extract or placebo. Laboratory and anthropometric measurements including FPG, OGTT, HbA1c, lipid Profile, serum visfatin, fasting insulin, HOMA-IR, weight, height, BMI and WHR were determined before and after intervention. The nutrient intake was obtained using 24- hour recall for each patient in three successive days. All nutrients and data analysis were done using FPII and SPSS15 soft-wares. Results: The log of visfatin was in significant correlation with age (t =2.86, p =0.03). Green tea extract significantly increased log visfatin and adiponectin levels in the experimental groups (P= 0.004 & P= 0.04 respectively). We found significant effects of green tea extract on the control of waist circumference (P=0.01), WHR (P=0.002) and HbA1C (P=0.03). Conclusions: Our data demonstrated the positive effect of green tea extract on HbA1c levels and other anthropometric factors by increasing in the circulating levels of visfatin and adiponectin in diabetic patients.
